Painting of a Young Child

I have been working on this portrait for my friends of their four year old daughter for quite a while, and it has been quite challenging. Part of that could be that i am so used to seeing her every day and yet she won’t sit still long enough to actually study her features.

Nurturing, acrylic on canvas on styrofoam, H15 x W15 x 1.5 inch (38 x 38 x 4cm)I painted her brother a few years ago (see photo to the right) when he was a bit younger. I don’t remember it being so challenging, maybe because it was in profile rather than front on. Or perhaps I was more intrigued with the rest of the painting and the theme of “nurturing” while this portrait painting was “just” her.

In any case I am finally happy with how it looks. I love the fierceness of the background and her intense eyes and her whirlwind strong hair that can’t be tamed. She is quite a quirky and strong young soul and its so much fun to see them both grow up as we live with them, kind of as surrogate grandparents, haha.

Acrylic on canvas, 15 x 15 x 1.3 in, (38 x 38 x 3.5 cm)

Below are a few reference photos and the painting in process…
