Heart Wisdom

Did you know that the heart is actually what runs our brains?

I read that…

“Most of us have been taught in school that the heart is constantly responding to “orders” sent by the brain in the form of neural signals. However, it is not as commonly known that the heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart! Moreover, these heart signals have a significant effect on brain function—influencing emotional processing as well as higher cognitive faculties such as attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving. In other words, not only does the heart respond to the brain, but the brain continuously responds to the heart.” source

When I was listening to Brené Brown’s audiobook Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice, I was delighted to hear her talk about her research showing that one of the best bridges between the head and the heart is THE HANDS: Creativity! There you go!

“Creativity embeds knowledge so that it can become practice. We move what we’re learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands. We are born makers, and creativity is the ultimate act of integration — it is how we fold our experiences into our being… ”

It’s time to listen to our hearts more than to our brains. And what we need is a physical practice integrating the intellectual, the emotional, and the spiritual. This is exactly why I love painting.

One way to do this is by checking in with your heart and see how you feel in your body and heart especially when you are uncertain about a decision. The heart always knows. If we allow our hearts to speak it would reach much higher wisdom than the brain ever could.
